MSFT keeps bumping into 550 call wall

MSFT rallied back to the highs at 550 and got rejected again.

That level keeps turning it away, and I think the gamma map explains why.

There’s a call wall at 550, and it looks big enough to move the stock. Aggregate max gamma is over 20% of average daily volume. Put simply, the hedging flows around that strike could be a meaningful share of a normal day’s trading. That’s the kind of size that can pin a stock or push it back.

A chunk of that gamma expires this week, so the wall should get a bit weaker once it rolls off. Even so, I think it’ll be tough for MSFT to break meaningfully above 550 to 555 before earnings on 28 October.

Carry is also very positive. Implied vol is pricing in more movement than the stock has actually been delivering, so being short some of that premium pays you while you wait.

Put those together and leaning against the overhead resistance makes sense to me. The wall gives you a level the stock has struggled to get through, and the carry pays you to sit there.

The window matters. Earnings on the 28th can blow through any gamma level, so for me this is a trade about the next couple of weeks, with defined risk, and nothing I’d want to hold into the print.

How I read a single-stock gamma map, and how I decide whether a wall is big enough to lean on, is one of the things I teach in our community. How much gamma is enough to matter. When it expires. What changes once it’s gone. My masterclass gives a taste of what else you'll find in there.
