The fly held you hostage

Hey,

Let's discuss butterfly spreads today.

These structures look incredible on paper. 10-to-1 payoff. Defined risk. Tight structure.

But here's the part that stings.

The fly only pays if you're near the sweet spot at expiry. Before that, you've got almost no delta. It's expiry or bust.

Picture this. You put on a call fly for Friday. Monday morning, the market rips exactly where you called it. You check your P&L and you're barely up. Delta is almost nothing because expiry is four days away and vol is still elevated. That theoretical payoff that got you excited? It doesn't show up until the thing is about to expire.

Wednesday, the market fades. Friday, it's back where it started.

Your prediction was right. Your timing was right. Your P&L is flat.

An outright call would have been up 150-200% on Monday. You could have taken the money and walked away. The fly held you hostage, waiting for a perfect expiry that never came.

Before you put on any structure, ask yourself one question:

"Can I cash in on this move when it happens, or only if it sticks until expiry?"

That question is worth more than any options calculator.

This video about the terminal risk reward fallacy I shared yesterday links back to this very topic.

The fly gives you leverage but locks you in. An outright call costs more, decays faster, and lets you take money off the table the moment the move happens. Know which one actually fits your view before you trade.
