What options data can and can't tell you
People expect too much from options data in the wrong moments.
Here's how the surface actually earns its keep, and where it doesn't.
The whole premise of what I look at is that the options market often shows divergences before a move happens. Skew behaving oddly. Vol not confirming price. Positioning building somewhere quietly. Or the opposite pattern, extreme capitulation where vol and skew go crazy after everyone has already piled in. Those setups are real and they're useful.
But when a move is triggered by an announcement landing out of nowhere, the options market had no idea either. There was nothing to read beforehand, because the information hadn't hit the tape yet. Anyone who tells you their vol surface predicted a piece of news is telling stories.
Where the surface really earns its keep is immediately afterwards. On the question of whether the move sticks.
That's what I'm watching right now.
Are people rolling positions up to higher strikes? That tells you they're pressing rather than taking profit.
How is vol behaving on the follow-through? Is the surface confirming the move or already backing away from it?
What has happened to the spot-vol correlation since the jolt? Did the relationship shift, and if so, in which direction?
Those are the reads that matter after the announcement lands. Before the announcement, there was nothing to know. After it, there's a whole conviction picture to build.
The surface's real strength is telling you whether the market believes what just happened. Calling the catalyst is a job it can't always do.

Options data is excellent at reading conviction, positioning, and vol expectations. It's excellent at flagging divergences that build over days or weeks. It's not built to predict news announcements that break out of nowhere.
Match the tool to the job. Use the surface for the reads it's designed for. Bring different tools for the reads it can't cover.
The surface reads conviction. Surprise is what catalysts deliver, and the surface has no view on those until after they land.
