The vol relationship few chart
There's a gravitational relationship in vol markets that typically holds everywhere. High vol, inverted curve. Low vol, contango.
Front month should price higher than back month when an asset is stressed. That's how fear works. It's urgent, it's now. When the market is calm, the opposite. Front month sits below back month. People are comfortable in the near-term but the futures holds more uncertainty.
This holds across equities, commodities, FX, crypto. One of the most stable patterns I've seen in 20 years.
Here is the kicker: The trade appears when it breaks.
An asset sitting at 50 vol with a flat curve? At that level, the term structure should be inverted. If it's not. Something doesn't fit.
Either front-end vol is too cheap for the regime, or back-end vol is too rich. Could be a positioning squeeze. Could be the market pricing something unusual in the back end.
I run a scatter plot every week (vol level vs term structure slope) across 20+ assets. The dots far from the regression line are where I start digging.

The edge comes from comparing across asset classes and spotting who's out of line relative to everyone else. Retail traders tend to read vol in isolation, one ticker at a time.
Vol doesn't exist in isolation. Context does the work.
Volatility first.
