Trading options for a living looks different from what people picture
Trading options for a living looks different from what most people picture.
Most people assume it means being glued to screens all day. My actual day is much closer to a series of check-ins spaced an hour or two apart.
That's by design. The structures I run are built to sit for stretches without me. Calendars, flyagonals, one-week iron condors. All positions where the risk profile doesn't turn on a dime the moment I look away.
The point is I can go and live my day and glance at the book now and then. Check the delta. Check the risk. Move on.
That's also why I stay away from 0DTE most of the time.
The gamma on those trades is enormous. Look away for half an hour and something moves, and you can get murdered before you're back at the desk. It suits someone with a strong range view and the time to babysit it. My preference is trades that survive being ignored for a while.
Building a book that lets you live your day starts with knowing which structures fit your life.
These theta trades aren't easy money either. To be clear about it.
You have to be active. You have to manage the position when something changes. Structures move against you, IV shifts, term structure inverts, and you have to make decisions. But the slower gamma of one-week and longer structures gives you room to breathe. Room enough to live the rest of your day.
For me, the whole point of building the book this way is that the trading serves the life. The book earns while I live. That's the setup worth building toward.

P.S. The real edge over a long career is building a book that survives you looking away. That's the framework worth learning.
